Is it harmful for an automatic car if you change between netural & drive while continuously moving?

Sometimes, in order to save gas

I change between drive and neutral

while continuously moving.

ex. I will be driving, press the gas.

then when i am going downhill, I will change

to neutral then when i need some power i will change

to drive, without stopping.

is this harmful for my car?

*automatic transmission.

  1. No, it will not hurt anything, as long as you're careful to not accidentally go into reverse, or rev your engine too high while in neutral, or when shifting back into gear. I don't have too many big hills around here, but I do often shift into neutral when coasting towards an upcoming red light.

    Pay no attention to the spammer/scammer if you value your car. Just because his scam is cheaper makes it no more valid than any other.

    And you will save some gas by doing what you're doing, because your engine is at idle while in neutral, as opposed to the higher RPM to coast in gear at speed. Think of it this way. Unless the hill you're going down is very, very steep, or you're going very slow, you will slow down if you let off the gas while in gear. This is known as "engine braking". Ask any trucker.

    And just because a lock-up Torque Converter isn't locked up anymore, doesn't mean the Torque Converter is disengaged. If that were true, your car wouldn't go anywhere when you tried to take off from a stop sign! LOL

    Not a lot of difference, but some. And make sure you get and use your free tire gauge from the McCain campaign. :-)


  2. YOU'LL BE OK. BUT IT DOESN'T SAVE AS MUCH GAS AS YOU THINK. YOU'D BE BETTER OFF MAKING SURE THE TIRES ARE FILLED PROPERLY, THE ENGINE IS PROPERLY TUNED AND SERVICED, AND YOU ACCELERATE SLOWLY.

  4. It's not harmful for the same reason as it won't give you better gas mileage. When you release the throttle on a cruising vehicle the lock up clutch disengages and the torque converter turbine will spin freely of the torque converter pump. It will act much the same as pushing the clutch in on a manual transmission. And as you are going downhill the computer will sense that the throttle is closed with no load to the engine so it will keep the transmission in the higher gear aiding the disengagement between the TC pump and turbine. Remember that the vanes inside the TC are designed to operate one way, really.  If they didn't, then you would experience engine braking anytime you lifted off the throttle.  Therefore, by shifting from drive to neutral you are disengaging power from an already disengaged transmission.

    2.  What you are doing doesn't actually save gas.  In fact, it causes your engine to burn more fuel. When the car is in gear the engine revs higher with your foot off the gas pedal because it is connected to the drivetrain.  Therefore the injectors shut off.  If you put the car in nuetral the revs drop down to idle.  The only way the engine can stay running at idle is to open up the injectors and burn some fuel.  Otherwise the engine will stall.  Engine revs are not a reliable indicator of fuel being burned. In this case they are your friend.

  8. it,s not harmful but your not saving any gas, since your engine is still running. the only time i throw it up in neutral is if i have to sit in heavy traffic a long time, to keep the transmission a little cooler.

  9. Well usually people dont do this because when you are going down hill you just let go of the gas pedal and your engine wont burn any gas.

    This might be bad for your gear box, if your doing it on a reggular basis.

    Just use your cruise control!!!
