Question:

Is it healthy to give my lovebird milk to drink?

i have a lovebird and sometimes when im drinking milk, she runs up to my glass and dunks her head in to take a couple of sips.

all im wondering is, if theres any kind of chemicals that would make my bird sick, or if her stomach would be upset after drinking milk.

  1. Hi,

    According to books etc then dairy products are poisonous to birds, you seem to have an emune bird.


  2. I was told birds are lactose intolerant.

  3. Birds usually don't do well with a lot of dairy products. It's not going to be toxic, but birds don't have the correct enzymes to digest milk correctly, so it pretty much passes right through, but can cause diarrhea since the sugars in milk draw more liquid to the intestines.

    The occasional piece of cheese is a little different since cheese doesn't contain lactose. Birds seem to be able to handle that a little better, but it should still be kept to small amounts.
