  1. If you let your grass grow long in the summer it usually means you have watered it which is not healthy for the grass. Not watering forces the grassroots to go down deeper to get to water producing stronger

and healthy roots which makes for healthy grass. Also grass is supposed to go dormant and yellow/brown in the summer. It is normal nature.

  2. The reason you DON'T want to let your grass grow long, is because when you mow, you should ONLY take 1/3 of the grass length off at a time. Ie...

6 inches of total height, you would only take 2 inches off, leaving 4 inches of height. The reason for this is because taking any more than 1/3 off will damage the grass. It causes it to go into shock, stunts the root system, and if done often enough, will eventually kill the grass.

  3. You do not want to let your grass grow to long because the grass needs decomposition for nutrients and stuff. That is why it is better to mow with   out a bag or if you don't want your lawn to look messy spread a little bit of dead grass of it.

  4. snakes

  5. if it gets to long then once you finally cut the grass its a battle to cut it, you have to do a lot of picking up of the grass and the grass will probably brown out once you cut it down to normal. i just would keep maintained

  6. In the summer, it IS good to raise the height-of-cut (HOC) on grasses because the more leaves on a plant, the more carbohydrates can be produced for increased root depth and overall better health.  Alot of people cut there lawns WAY to short which puts alot of stress on the plant (and root system) during the warm summer months.

    So, yes let it grow!

I recommend mowing at 2"-2.5 inches in the summer.  Then, as fall rolls around you can slowly reduce the cut to 1.5" until the following summer.
