Is it illegal for a 9 and 6 year old to be latch key kids in California?

The 9 year old is extremely mature, and the neighbors are home during that time. They would be home for 2.5 hours every day sometimes less. I cannot find any information on a legal age. Does anyone have any information?

Its legal. Social services is who you call to find out. The law says you can't neglect a child who won't allow itself to be neglected. Meaning, if they can take care of themselves you're not neglecting them. There is a scale for age on how long kids can be left alone. It varies a little from state to state and isn't held to be cut in stone but generally goes something like this, 0-5 never left alone, 6-10 less than 8 hrs, 10-14 less than 24 hrs, and 15yrs+ - days or even weeks alone.

Whats a latch key kid.If the question relates to leaving your kids alone in the house for ANY length of time is TOTALY irresponsible of you,if your 9 year old is "mature" for his age speak to parents who have lost children to tragic accidents when they were home alone
