Question:

Is it illegal for a car company to sell me a car and say its an 04 and its really an 05?

I bought my car from a place called Rusty Eck here in Wichita, KS. I was told my car is an 04 and the insurance people said that the vin number on my car says its an 05. The little sticker with the vin number inside the door says 04/04. When I bought the car last September it had around 62300 miles on it. So Im thinking what these people did was, they said it was an "04" because of the mileage. So if this is true, should I take the car back and demand another car? Ok thank you!

  1. it was made in 04 for sale in 05

  2. It's doubtful that the dealer told you the wrong year on purpose. The car was likely manufactured late in the year, and was to be sold as the 05 model, the VIN indicates this info. Is it that important to you? Your insurance rates shouldn't be effected greatly by this. If you are happy with your purchase, then roll with it. If you are unhappy with the car, in general, then sell it, but whether it's 04 or 05 is really not of great importance.

  3. I think that you can do what ever you would like to but in the end I think that it would cost more than it is worth. There might be several reasons for the mix up. A part was replaced with a used part that would fit on either car. That is just one and there is always a typographical error. I will also tell you one more thing and that is tha many of the auto builders now bring cars out earl like almost a year in advance anf then they ae sold as a 2005 but came out in the spring of 2004. I will tell you that you can spend a lot of money trying to win a no win situation. If they had done this the otherr way around I would understand your dismay but if you bought a used car as a 2004 and it is in fact a 2005 you are most likely atleast a $1,000 better off.

  4. The 04/04 probably means that was the month and year it was built. Some cars start production early in the year and are released as the next MY (model year). My car was built in August of 2004 and it's a 2005.

Why the dealer told you one thing or another, I can't say. Maybe it was human error, maybe it was something more malicious. Confront them and find out.

  5. You are complaining that you got a newer model car than you bargained for?  What is this world coming to?

I bought my 1995 Maxima SE 5-spd in May 1994 (one of the first ones off the boat).  It is now 14 years old and still going strong.

  6. Somewhere on your paperwork, I'm sure it stated that the vehicle was a 2005. Technically, you got the better part of the deal because usually an 05 will be worth more than an 04, in spite of the mileage. (even with a deduct for excess miles)

    Don't sweat it.

  7. I have met this kind of problem before, here is the resource I found useful.http://car-insurance.easyideas4u.info/ca...

  8. I worked at a dealership for about 2 yrs and they didn't lie to you more than likely the car was built april of 2004 but the manufactuer upgraded it from the last 2004 model ( ie different features) so it became the 2005 model bc more than likely they were running deals on the 04 models....  new cars come out around oct of the yr before ( 2009 model will come out in oct 2008) but they can call them whatever they want....there is nothing wrong with telling you that the car was a 2004 bc it was built in 2004 came out in 2004 but was released as the 2005 model....I have a 2000 civic that was built in march of 1999 but it's a 2000

  9. First question is do you like the car? If yes than what is the deal. There is no way to tell who is wrong on the year of the car. What year does the registration and or title say. It would be the document that states what year car it is. There is no changing the legal documentation. If the state says its an 04 than it is an 04.
