Is it illegal for a psychologist to abruptly terminate the patient without notice

after seeing the patient weekly for 4 1/2 years, with no aftercare plan, while that patient is suicidal? no contract was solved. This is for my girlfriend not me.

  1. Unethical.  Report him.  I'm pretty sure it is illegal for him to act on those threats.

    You might want to talk to your gf some more.  There has to be more to the story.  Regardless, he should have provided a referral.

Unethical yes...report this person to www.apa.org ethic's board or even better to their licensing board (whatever state your gf lives in).  It's called "abandonment" and failure to terminate.  Whether it's illegal is up to your state.  Wherever you live check the administratice code of psychologists and see what it says

  3. I honestly don't know, about illegal. However I do know that there has to be a reason. Depending on where you live, there should be a number to call, to look into it. Meanwhile I would recommend that your gf finds another psychologist.
