  1. I'm from BC, and noticed it is a common practice in different parts of the US.  Here in BC, the Vancouver bars scan your ID AND it is finally being challenged.

  2. heck, it should be illigal for them to even drive....

  3. Canada has a  Personal Information Protection Act. Home Depot, Visions and Canadian Tire all have been ordered to stop copying driver's licenses. Ticketmaster was told last year to stop sharing e-mail addresses with event organizers for marketing purposes.

Ten or 20 years ago, credit card companies would sell their databases, but now retailers aren't allowed to use e-mail addresses without permission, and they must provide a form giving that permission. While retailers have traditionally used personal information for fraud prevention, e-mail addresses are like gold for marketing purposes. But people can still say no to such requests, unless they choose to be on a company's subscriber list and receive communications from them.

Many retailers ask customers for personal information, and it is anyone's right to say no to most of these requests, says a spokesman for the privacy commissioner's office. Please note "most" - there are always exceptions to the rules.

If you have any concerns that your privacy is being invaded you can complain to the Privacy Commissioner's Office. You can file a formal complaint which will be investigated. I should tell you that the process can take even up to a year to get a ruling though.

When busineses ask for personal information they must

Inform the individual in a meaningful way of the purposes for the collection, use or disclosure of personal data.

Obtain the individual's consent before or at the time of collection, as well as when a new use is identified.

They also cannot make consent a condition for supplying a product or a service, unless the information requested is required to fulfil an explicitly specified and legitimate purpose.

To sum it up: the hotel can ask you to show them your license for veriifcation purposes but it's another matter for them to photocopy it without your permission. If you do give permission make sure you know to what purpose it will be used, who has access to it and how it is stored and disposed of.

    Good Luck

  4. yeah

  5. It is probably a very grey area legally, and will probably continue to happen until it is successfully challenged in the court system.  Have you asked a lawyer in Newfoundland?  That might be your best source for an accurate answer.

  6. I would say that it would be because of the privacy act , as well now someone as a complete identity about you and may get other ID from other places from your driver's license and as well credit cards and so on . Suggestion do not have have photocopy your driver's license . Good luck and have a great day .
