Is it illegal for my principal/pastor to make me take out my lip piercing?

We've never had this rule before. & now all of a sudden he decides because I got my lip pierced it's not allowed. I go to a private independent school. I'm 18 & a senior there. He told me I'm not even allowed to use a retainer (it's something that is clear & keeps the hole but you can't see it). & I think it may be against the law to tell me I can't have my lip pierced & go to school there. Because it's going against my rights, right?. Does he have the right to tell me I can't have my lip pierced?? I've tried to Google it. But, i don't know how to word it in the answers. & i can't seem to find it anywhere. Someone please tell me. I'm desperate.

  1. private school, his rules. U r 18, he is being a jerk.

  2. When you walk into a school you rights are gone.  You have to play by his rules because he runs the school.  You only have a year left.  Keep your piercing in your locker and when you have a break between classes run it through your lip and then put it in as soon as you leave, you should be fine.

  3. you're in a private school (public is the same too).. rules are set by the administration. it's not illegal for them to set guidelines, and unfortunately piercing is not allowed in your school.. it's really a silly rule-- your lip isn't hurting anyone, but a lot of school corporations have rules over piercings in areas other than the ear. it's the same in schools that require a uniform-- students may not like it, but these are rules they have to follow while they are in school.. :( sorry about your lip

  4. I suggest you ask him to show you in writing of any policy that they have that forbids you to remove your piercing. I work with law enforcement at the sheriff office, I have a nose piercing that anyone can clearly see, my tragus pierced and rook pierced, that my supervisor doesn't mind me having, for things like lip or eyebrow piercings she recommends retainers to be placed in. I am not sure of that school's policy but if they have strict dress code which includes piercings  I guess remove it and just replace it after school but remove it before going to school. Good Luck.

  5. If you go to a private school, then they can make any rules they'd like.

It's called a DRESS CODE, and I'm willing to bet that body piercings were addressed in the documents your parents signed when they paid for your tuition.

  6. dont no

  7. since its private school NOT public then they can have whatever rules they want they're not affiliated or controlled by the laws that govern public schools. so if you look in your school rule book im betting that there is a section about piercings and tatoos. and im going to bet it mentions something about lip rings and the sort. but who knows, looking in ur handbook probably would have been the easiest thing to do.

  8. I agree it is not fair. Find the school guidelines and see if anywhere it says you cant have piercing. Then tell your parents and see what they say. If the guidelines say no jewelry or piercings then put the retainer in and leave it. Its not jewelry so therefore you are not breaking the rules. Don't get into to much trouble but dont back down for you think is right!! Good luck.
