Is it illegal to own a coyote or a coyote hybrid in the state of Oklahoma.

I will be calling the department of wildlife conservation tomorrow, but I was just curious.

  1. Who cares. Don't ask me, ask your own state and city for the laws.

  2. Governments can be funny that way.  I don't know, but I'd guess yes.

  3. The term would be confine.. you may not confine it.

By definition you never own it... just confine it.

  4. yes keeping any wild animal is illegal as a pet,go to your local animal shelter and adopt a nice abandoned dog for a pet it is after all mans best friend and will be safer that a wild animal

  5. YES

  6. Hybrids are complete different than a purebred wild animal.  Hybrids can never be returned to the wild.  Often they fall through the cracks and are legal.

Coyote hybrids are usually under the same laws as the wolf hybrids.

Per a web search, looks like they ARE legal (with some strings attached) in Oklahoma.

  7. It is illegal to possess any wildlife without a permit in any state.  So you cannot try to keep a coyote (this law isn't generally enforced very rigorously).  As for a hybrid, they are kind of a legal loophole and you can keep them, though I wouldn't suggest it, as they are more likely to be aggressive towards people and other dogs.  Keeping wild animals is a bad idea in general (hybrids or otherwise).
