I probably know the answer to this, but if there is a forest that is on state land out in the middle of no where, is it illegal to build on? This is miles from any civilization. I have camped out there multiple times and have not seen a single human being out there is all the years I have been out there. It is in the foot hills of the Adirondacks. All I want to build is a small log cabin that me and my buddies can stay in and not get wet when it rains. Nothing fancy. Just so we can stay out there and fish for a week at a time. I would not bring in any non natural products. I would just use fallen trees and other stuff.

  1. Call your State Extension Service.  I would bet it is illegal.

  2. Yes, it's illegal to build on state or federal land.  It also illegal to cut timber on public lands without a permit. Sometimes the responsible agency will issue a permit for a cabin or permanent camp.  As Patricia suggested, contact the state land management or federal forest service agency that has jurisdiction for the area.
