Is it illegal to buy a Thai Bride?

There is a movie on Channel 4 right now in the UK called The Thai Bride.

I googled the name and website came up about buying one, isn't it illegal? I didn't go on the website, i'm just curious about it, will I get done?

Also I don't want to buy one lol, I just thought it sounds disgusting and it sounds illegal?

Totally illegal.  The "bride" gets deported and barred from re-entry.  The "groom" goes to prison.  They still try to bluster it through as a "marriage" and get the "bride" immigration status.  That's why marriage fraud investigations are becoming routine with any "bride" from Thailand, Philippines, African countries, Russia, etc.  All of these countries (and too many more to list) are becoming notorious for marriage fraud.

In most countries of the world, it is illegal to "own" anyone, for any reason. This is apparently often observed mostly in the avoidance of being caught in some countries, and of course, there are countries where the cultural context results in apparent slavery of one kind or another, though the people following their cultural imperatives would be horrified if it was called slavery!

Totally.  But you would be amazed at the ways that people get around it.  Often the men buying the brides are pigs and this is the reason they can't find a bride in their own country.  We had one such man living in our building a few years ago.  She wasn't even allowed to leave the house in case she became independent.  He was obviously mentally ill by the way he behaved.

Sometimes the woman that is "for sale" is actually a slave or under age or both.  The money doesn't go to her, it goes to some pimp.  Sometimes she has been sold by her family in order to prevent them from staving to death.  Her life is ended once she has been sold.  There are prostitutes working the streets all over noth America and Eurpope who  are there because they were "sold as brides".

There are also a lot of scam artists out there .  It would please me to no end if someone who was "buying a bride" got stung.

One idea might be to forward th web site to immigration if you still have it marked.  It is probably run out of Thailand but they may or may not be aware of it and can monitor it.  I saw a documetary that stated selling chiild brides and child prostitutes is on the rise in that country ever since the tsunami.  Like I said, men are pigs if they take advantage of such issues.  And women too.

Well, you are not really buying her, you are paying a lot of fees to an agency to hook you up with her.  What happens after that is another story.  In some cases people who do this actually find love.  In some cases the guys are doing it to take advantage of the woman and abuse her, making sure to keep her isolated so she doesn't know her rights, in some cases it's the woman taking advantage of the man, disappearing as soon as she has her papers or worse yet, cleaning out his bank account before she goes.
