  1. What are you bored just wanting attention or something?

How can you really think repairing a car is illegal??

    Did i miss something

  2. I am assuming that your talking about the hole thing to include where it shows the mileage.

Yes you can replace it, just when you sell it, there is a spot on the title where you mark unknown or something like that. And tell the person who you sell it to, ect.

    Not illegal at all.

  3. Ive never heard of the gauge breaking ! Are you sure its not the sending unit that's in the tank ? I would have that checked first !

  4. It is legal to replace the instrument cluster. You will need to disclose to any future buyer at what mileage it was done, and the preexisting mileage, if any, that was on the new cluster. You will also need to notify your insurance company if making a claim. Most people note this on the title at the time of sale or attach a statement.

The statement should read something like this-

"Instrument cluster changed on 8-16-08 by John Doe.

    Original Odometer reading- 116,924

Replacement cluster had preexisting mileage of 113,867"

    Signed-

    (signature)"

If you only attach a statement to the title, get a signed receipt that they received it, but it's better to do on the title since it's more likely to stay with it if the car is sold again. Your local DMV office should be able to help you, and some even have a form that you can fill out as a disclosure.

  5. If the odometer reading is different afterwards, it is still legal provided when you sell the car, you tell the new owner about the change in reading. In many cars though, like the Chevy Cavalier, with an electronic odometer, the reading is stored in the engine controller and does not chsnge with a new cluster.

Remember, it is only illegal if you use any change in odometer reading to defraud someone.

  6. No...but it'll be off.  Calibrate it by running alongside a friend's car at like 20, 30, and 40 mph...you might want to do it on the freeway too, like at about 65 or 70 (contact by cell phone rather than yelling).  Then you can find out how much to add or subtract from the displayed speed.

  7. no it is not illegal but you may want to have it checked out so you dont run out of gas one day lol

  8. Is what legal? You mean repairing your car? ROFL!! Yeah, car repairs are perfectly legal.

  9. As long as you document the mileage from the first odometer and record the mileage on the replacement so you will have actual miles     on the title when you sell it. You should have no problem!

  10. If you are replacing the odometer, you are required to set the new odometer to the existing mileage on the car and certify it.  But keep in mind that replacing the whole instrument cluster may not fix the problem with the gas gauge.  There could be a problem with the float in the tank, or anywhere in between.
