is it illegal to download music for free that is just really really old? like either classical or beatles or some songs from bands that broke up or something? and do songs ever become unsigned after the artists stop singing? like what happens to the music that is kinda dead

Any music that CAN be downloaded, someone has retained rights to. So no, by law no matter how old you THINK the music is (Beatles. lol. You don't get more protected then theirs), it can't be without permission... either free on the artist's site or from pay sites.
