I find wearing shoes a hassle and somewhat uncomfortable. I would like to know if I would get in trouble with the law for driving without shoes in the state of South Carolina, or for any state for that matter.

  1. i don't think it's safe or legal to drive in any state without your shoes on.

but that could just be my opinion... laws agaist barefoot driving might just be an.. "urban legend"

  2. It is a myth that there is any law against barefoot driving. It is perfectly legal in all 50 states.

Oh, and you're not alone: there are plenty of barefoot societiies, representing everybody from barefoot hikers to barefoot drivers.

  3. Driving barefoot is not illegal in South Carolina. Nor is it illegal in any other state that I have heard of. A while back a guy set out to answer to this question and sent letters to the DMV in all 50 states. He received 42 replies, and in none of those 42 states was it illegal. Check it out here: http://tafkac.org/legal/driving.barefoot...

  4. It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity.

Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write you up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.

  5. Most states prohibit driving barefoot for safety reasons.
