It's blown off this morning, and having only just bought the car I don't have the log book yet.

I need to work, is it illegal to drive with only a front number plate till I have the log book and get it fixed?

  1. Very.

You could try painting the number on a bit of card - number plate sized - and you might get away with it temporarily.

  2. The police may fine you or give you notice to repair or replace the number plate within a certain number of days. They will usually take the softer option if you explain to them that it is already being fixed though.

A local garage may be able to help you out. If you bought it from a car dealership then I would take it to them and ask them to fix it!

  3. It is in the UK, unless you are the Queen.

  7. Yes. It is.  It isn;t illegal to drive without a front number plate though.  Unfortunately, it is also illegal to drive with black and white plates on the rear so you can't just put the front one on the back.

  8. It is illegal.  However, you can do your best by writing the number big and bold on a piece of cardboard and put it in the rear window (don't block your view). It's quite possible you'll be stopped, but any copper with a modicum of sense will understand when you explain.

  9. get a piece of cardboard (approx 18 ins long x 6ins wide ) write car reg

number on it'  tie to bumper or put in rear window if stopped by police ;tell them it is a temporary thing till you get a new one made

  11. Although you do need the log book to get a numberplate some places may bend the rules slightly if you explain the situation and show them any paperwork you do have such as the green slip from the old v5 if it's a used car, or a receipt from the dealer you bought it from if it's brand new.

  12. yes. this is because the police wont be able to recognise your vehicle if they travel behind you.

  15. yes it is unless you got a trade plate on

  16. Yes...the police will pull you in for that, without a doubt.
