I have a workout book that I would like to make copies of the exercises and make a poster for my workout room. Is it illegal to copy those pictures if I own the book and it is for my own personal use?

  1. Probably questionably legal; but if you aren't selling it and no one but you sees it, no one cares and no harm done

  2. Yes, making copies of photos into something else is illegal and you would have to prove a "fair use" if you were caught. Nobody is likely to go after you if it's a single copy, used privately in your own home.

As for teachers, they have a statutory exemption to make a limited number of copies, to be used in a non-profit, educational setting.

  3. As a teacher I run into legality issues whenever I copy things. We are supposed to clear anything with the office before we do it. To my understanding, as long as you re just doing it for yourself and you aren't making multiple copies to sell, you are well within your rights.
