havn't you ever seen that warning on a dvd?! it says something like 250,000 dollers for illegal copying of the dvd, or up to 5 years in prison

You can legally make 1 copy of the DVD for backup use only.  However, it is illegal to break the encryption on the DVD that would allow you to make the backup.  It is a screwy legal system.

It's legal as long as it is for personal use. If you sell/give away the original, then you will be in possession of an illegal copy.

as far as i know it's not illegal to make copies of your own dvd's , but it's illegal to copy dvd's that you do not own
