  1. When you refuse to pay - The fine doubles and then you start getting bailiff letters, each one adding about £200 to the fine.  Eventually you are arrested and fined the total amount (that depends on how long you have evaded payment) with the possibility of a jail term.

Think on the bright side! at least I don't think they take your vehicle away though while you're away!

  2. Generally, yes, but there will be a sign showing when you might be able to park...

  3. Rules for double yellow lines:

The term 'Park' usually means to turn off the car's engine, and to leave it unattended. The laws will often state that it is prohibited to leave your vehicle on them, however disabled badge holders are allowed to park on them providing they do not cause any form of obstruction.

Couriers who leave the hazards on and quickly pop in to the recipients address can do this, and the Police won't usually mind providing it is only for a short amount of time, again they can not cause any obstructions.

    Rules for single yellow lines:

You should usually be allowed to park on them unless signs specify otherwise.

  4. A single yellow line means there is restricted parking and a nearby plate sign will display the conditions of the restriction ie NO PARKING 9.00am TILL 6.00 pm  or something similar. So it is ok to park outside of the resticted times stated.

  5. There's usually a time limit (e.g. Mon-Fri 8am-6pm) or something similar, so it's legal to park outside the times shown.

More details can be found here -

Possible penalty for non payment is as follows: this may vary from area to area but here's the city of York's regulations; -

  6. depends entirely on what the local parking restrictions state

double yellow is no parking ever

single yellow indicates there are restrictions in force..

could be time or day based (eg no parking 08:00..17:00, or no parking on Weekends).

there has to be a plate nearby which indicates what the restrictions are.

there are some exceptions for disabled drivers/passengers and delivery vehicles (I think)

  7. i think it has a time limit,5 or 10 minutes max i think

  8. Single yellow line means there are waiting restrictions, the specifics of which are on a sign nearby. Highway code gives all the details. Go to the link below and click on download road markings. You will need adobe or similar.

  9. It is illegal to park on single yellow lines, during the times shown on nearby signs.

Saying, "Oh, I didn't see the signs" isn't an excuse.  It just means you didn't bother looking properly...

  10. You can park on single yellow lines outside the hours stated (should be nearby on a timeplate), double yellows however are a no-no.

  11. YES it is ILLEGAL to park on Single Yellow Lines (SYL) & Double Yellow Lines (DYL) ! You can Load/Unload & pick up & set down passengers on Single Yellow Lines (SYL) & Double Yellow Lines (DYL) but NOT park on them ! Check the Timeplate for the SYL or if there is none the Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) Entry Signs for the appropriate Enforcement Times for the SYL concerned ! N.B. *** Please look out for Kerb Marks (Blips) that indicate a Loading/Unloading Restriction & if there are ANY check the appropriate Timeplate to make sure that the Loading/Unloading Restriction is NOT in force for the time that you are STOPPED ? If the Loading/Unloading Restriction is in force at that particular time then do NOT even STOP at that particular location ! ***

On Double Yellow Lines (DYL) these are enforced 24 hours a day ! *** N.B. Please look out for Kerb Marks (Blips) that indicate a Loading/Unloading Restriction & if there are ANY check the appropriate Timeplate to make sure that the Loading/Unloading Restriction is NOT in force for the time that you are STOPPED ? If the Loading/Unloading Restriction is in force at that particular time then do NOT even STOP at that particular location ! ***

Outside of the Enforcement Times as shown on the appropriate Timeplate / CPZ Entry Sign then the Restrictions do NOT apply !

I suggest that you get an up to date copy of 'The Highway Code' & read it ALL the way through, especially the section showing the Road Signs ! Knowledge is POWER !

  12. If you can show that there were no signs visible, you're in the clear. It's not the yellow lines that tell you not to park, it's the sign. The lines merely tell you what bit of road the sign refers to.

So, no sign, no case to answer.
