I heard somewhere that it is illegal. Is that true? I mean fliers to advertise business?

  1. yeah, i got fined about $600 for getting caught placing posters on public spaces in fitzroy about 15 years ago. i wish i'd been on the other side of the road in collingwood, where the enforcement is less strict, or was at the time anyway

  2. It depends on what you mean by "posting adverts". If you mean sticking up posters on walls or poles, then yes that is illegal, but I think it's something enforced by the local councils, so the penalties may vary from place to place. If you mean creating fliers and delivering them to people's mail boxes, then that is legal, provided that you respect the signs that say "No junk mail" and "No advertising material". I'm not sure exactly what the legal position is if you ignore those signs, but it's safe to assume that you won;t find receptive customers behind them anyway. Finally, if you mean creating fliers, putting them in envelopes and paying Australia Post to deliver them, then that should be just fine, but potentially more expensive.
