My school was getting rid of all it's old math textbooks, and was giving them away for free. I got a book that said "This work is protected by United States copyright laws and is provided solely for the use of college instructors in reviewing course materials for classroom use. Dissemination or sale of this work, or any part (including on the World Wide Web) is not permitted."

Does this mean it's illegal to sell it? Or is it just highly unethical?

  1. its neither... how do you know a student is going to buy it and use it for cheating.  Thats a big assumption.  maybe another college professor will buy it and use it.  It isn't illegal to buy or sell any book that is legally published and sold in the US, even Mein Kampf is legal to buy and sell.

If a student wants to buy it, that's good thinking on his part if he uses it as a study guide and not as a big cheat sheet.  How do you know that even if a student bought it, that they wouldn't use it as a study -aid only?  Cant argue against it because it's all assumptions.

Its not illegal or unethical, if anything you are spreading knowledge by selling a textbook.... which is VERY ethically ok! lol

  2. Neither.  Just don't post them on the net.
