I know some small shops that sell them cheap after they have expired. But large supermarket chains only sell food really cheap when they are nearing their expiration date. Are these small businesses selling expired food illegally? If it help, I live in Australia.

  1. I know in Britain, it wasn't illegal to buy out of date food (I bought loads of it myself) but it was illegal to have it available on the shop floor for sale.

  2. Not sure who monitors the foods in Australia but in the US, it is mandatory that all edible food must have a "Shelf life or Expiration date" These are just guide lines and the date listed will be at its highest quality before the date listed on the package. Why does Sour Cream have an expiration date? Is there such a thing as "Fresh, Sour Cream?"

  3. Not really.  When I go to the store I often find products with expiration dates on them! I definately DON'T buy them though! Food like milk and dairy products should be taken off the shelf, canned goods could possibly be used safely unles the can is bruised! Check the top of the can, if it is raised in the middle. don't buy it! It's up to the consumer to be aware of dates! In a large store, management could miss some outdated goods, just bring it to their attention!!
