Is it illegal to send fake emails?

I don't just mean sending a fake mail to prank your friends, but a more serious long term process.

What do you mean by 'fake' emails?  That is the key.  Do you mean you are using a made up name to protect your identity? or are you sending a fake email to apply for a job at the white house?  There is a line between fraud and protecting your identity.

It isn't illegal I think. Its up to the receiver if he believes what he has read.
