  1. Depends on the state, there are a lot of stupid laws out there, man.

  2. It is not illegal IF you have permission.  So, just ask.

One thing to consider is whether the yard has been treated with pesticides.  You will end up with those residues in your compost.  That may be acceptable to you if you are not using your compost on food plants.

  3. In some places, it actually IS illegal to raid the curbside trash (which seems stupid to me!), but this varies widely from one community to the next.

Anyway, it's not likely that any one is going to report you for "stealing" (?) bags of grass-clippings, but why risk it?

If you're worried about, just knock on the door and ask the homeowner whether he/she would mind if you took the grass-clippings for your compost heap.  I doubt anyone will object!

In fact, it's a great way to recycle, and you may have people offering future "contributions" once they know you're interested!

  4. If it's off of their private property by only a smidgen then it's on public property.  Once it's on public property you can take it legally.  Suggestion:  If you have neighbors with bagging mowers give them your phone number.  They will probably call you and be glad to get rid of it.

  5. It is not illegal. In fact you can come and get mine anytime you want. I just put them in the trash anyway. Happy mowing.

  6. I don't know about where you live, but I can get free compost in a construction area where they put down raw compost for people to have as much as they want.

  7. It could be considered stealing if its on their property, but they're usually trying to get rid of it. I'd knock on their door first and ask.

  8. No, its ok to take it if its put out for the garbage to take. If you think its not ok, knock on their door and get their permission first.
