Is it illegal to unlock a t-mobile cellphone for my at&t sim card by a code i found on the internet???

i found a cell phone at a payphone that was really nice but it was dead. so i found a charger for it and the person had already got a new phone. so i got a code on the internet and unlocked the phone. can i get into trouble for that??
