I want to walk across the united states to see my boyfriend. I am in California and he is in South Carolina. I have it all figured out, but I can't avoid the freeway. Is it illegal to walk, or do I have to hitch hike or take a bus or something? I only have 83.17 for the trip, and my calculations say if i walk 3 miles an hour on average, including sleeping, so a little faster than that, it will take 39 days. I can deal with the money, but I don't know what I'm going to do about the freeway problem. HELP!

  1. Yes it is in all states...

  2. Yes it is illegal

  3. It all depends on state laws if Pedestrians are allowed on those parts of the highway.  Also note, on those same stretches it may also be illegal for a car to stop (unless emergency), so your chance of getting a ride are next to nil.

You can sit at the top near the start of a freeway on ramp where you can legally walk and cars can legally stop.  This way, the car is not yet at a high speed and the probabilities for them to stop are greater.
