Okay so here's the thing: I'm doing a movie project on domestic abuse and my plan is to use clips from advertisements and PSA and stuff and put it together into one whole movie and have music playing in the background. Then I was thinking of putting in effects. Now, I want to show this to my class when I'm done , but my question is: is this illegal to do? i mean, I know the clips I'm using isn't mine, but I'm not like telling people I made the clips, I just tell them I edit them. What do you think?

  1. Extremely illegal.

To be legal, you should get permission from the publishers or producers of the product.  At the very least, you should attribute the work to them (though this will NOT fulfill the letter of the law).

Think of it this way - HOW are they going to make any money if you just use the clip without referring anything back to them?  You are, essentially, stealing their effort.

As a teacher, I would fail you.  I certainly have failed others for this.

  2. oh yea.. it's ILLEGAL

  3. in copyright issues there's a few argument... but from what i learn from the multimedia law... you can use the item as long as u r not using it to earn money. from what i can see... you can use the material as u r just using it to show to your class. and in the end of your video, just credit them with something like this:

    Special Thanks:

    or

    Video Taken from:

or i think this might be the best:

    Video Source

dont worry about the copyright thing. as long as u r using it for education and also you're not earning money... then it should be fine!

  4. TOTALLY illegal, without permission and then if you get permission you'll owe them credits and possibly money. take your own pics.

  5. Yes. i mean if they dont tell then yu have no real problem. but if yu were to get told on im pretty sure it wont b good.  people do anything for money

  6. It's illegal unless you get permission from the owners, but you'd still probably get an F for not making your own content.

You should do some real research and interview someone like a wife who was beaten by her ex-husband.

  7. If it is copyright. It is illegal. You need to ask permission.

  8. It's probably technically illegal. I can remember watching movies in most of my classes on the last day of school. If you look closely at the FBI warning that was at the beginning of every one of those movies you will see a sentence that says it's not to be, copied, redistributed, or displayed publicly. This was in a public school, so that was technically illegal.

I suggest you get your teacher's opinion on the subject.

  9. you could ask permission of the sources. maybe put in a part at the beginning giving credit to your sources. it really depends on you situation. like is this for high school, college, television?

  10. you would have to ask permission of the owners

but since your just showing it to your class, just give them credit at the end
