  1. You know they lie from the president right on down.

Play dumb and never answer questions or emails using their numbers.

Ex. go right to the source He said he was a cop call police and ask about what you were told. I hope you still have the number give it to the police.    This may not go away if you don't have the number file a report,  it may save your but later. To many people are being scammed.

  2. Is it illegal for a Debit Collector to lie.....?

Of course it is.  But that doesn't stop them.  That's what makes mini tape recorders so wonderful!  You can record them without them ever knowing it!

  3. They cannot use underhanded tactics to get you to pay for anything.  I;m sorry that happened to you.

  4. Yeah, that is unethical and illegal. I would file a complaint with the police and tell them that the collector was impersonating a police officer.

EDIT:: You know, now that I think about it, it sounds like a phishing scam. Why would a "debt collector" call and pretend to be a cop to get a debt? And why claim you owe something that you don't? Is the company legit?

  5. The debt collector bought that debt and doesn't  make any money unless they collect. They will eventually sell it to another party at a reduced price.  Because they assume that you you're not recording the conversation, they will like rug or whatever it takes to get you to send them money.  Getting a phone answering machine,  and screening  your calls is your best defense. Then when they call you just press. "delete".
