Question:

Is it impolite/improper to share foods in a diner?

The 2 of us entered a diner - and since we usually order in excess of what we usually eat and take out some of the foods, we decided that we should only order a green salad and a main dish and share them. And we're right - we just finished everything without leftover and left the diner full.

  1. There's nothing wrong with plate sharing.  It ends up costing around the same as two seperate meals since there is usually a charge put on to do it.

  2. No I don't think its impolite to share food, espically since the 2 of you decided thats what you were going to do. If it wasn't planned and you just started eating off your friends plate, that would be rude.

  3. Sorry to say it but it is considered rude to share a meal in a restaurant. Next time order two meals and ask for a doggy bag.

  4. I don't see anything wrong with that. American portions are huge and threre is a lot of waste. A note on the tip, though. Remember that they have to clean up after two people, so tip on the high side.

  5. No, I don't think it's impolite.  Being a diner or a restaurant.  with today's economy, the business should be happy to have folks coming in to dine.  If the restaurant/diner has a problem with it they should tell you when ordering that a service charge will be added to the bill for splitting orders or sometimes on the menu itself, it states no splitting orders.  In that case, there would be a problem.

    My answer is NO.

    Bon Appetit!!!

  6. No, I don't think it's impolite at all. A lot of couples and friends just order one or two meals and share their food, so it's normal, too.

  7. This is America!! Do as you please with your money! If the restarant didn't allow it they would tell you. That should tell you that you are not the only one that does it!! Most restarants give soo much food until they sometimes tell you that it is going to be enough for the two of you. ( Olive Garden)

  8. No way is it improper or impolite for a couple to do this!

In my experience it's generally considered romantic to share a bit of your food (not sure about the whole course! I guess this might look like you can't afford a whole dinner!) , or for a man to order desert he doesn't  want 'to share' cos she wants it!

You haven't done anything outrageous though - why even ask unless someone was watching you? :)

  9. No way... I do this all the time. We'll share a pizza for example and get a side salad or something, half the pizza each and some salad each...
