  1. It depends if your getting financial aid or not, or really need it. Its always a plus to try to find scholarships. I would highly recommend it, more money is always a big help. You might not realize it not, or want to put the effort into applying for them, but do it!!

I just finished up my BA and sure wish I would of took the time and someone would of encouraged me to apply!

  2. Yes! Living expenses are increasing, including the cost of college. Due to the lowering economy and high competition for jobs, the need for a education after high school is higher. Find out how to pay for college through scholarships and grants.

Step1Do your research: If you are currently in school you can start by asking your high school guidance counselor for any information regarding scholarships. No matter what age you are when you start college after high school funding can be found. Do on line searches, using free online scholarship web sites such as fastweb.com will give you allot of assistance.

Step2Look around you: Many community businesses give grants to local students. Ask large businesses in your area about scholarships. Also ask any business small or large you or a live in family member works for. Businesses give out scholarships for many reasons, the main two are to help the community and get credit for taxes.

Step3Look at your talents: Individuals that participate in a local choir, are great at sports, or have other unique hobbies or talents may qualify for scholarships. Contact local interest groups that specialize in such talents, such as the Community choir, local business association, or the Clown club. Depending on the size of your community, there could be hundreds. Look state wide and nationally as well. Never be embarrassed to ask, if they do not fund scholarships independently they probably have information on where to obtain one.

Step4Write your way to college: If your high school grades and college prep tests are not perfect, don't worry you still may qualify for scholarships through essay and short story contests. Do not be intimidated if you are not a great writer. Put time and energy into a essay topic you care about and you might find yourself surprised on the outcome. You will find many of these type of scholarships in step one under the topic of essay or story writing scholarships.

Step5Go to the college you plan to attend: Many education facilities have career planners that specialize in finding scholarships and grants for the individual college students. They will also help you fill out Student Financial Aid information. Most counselors are glad to help a ambitious student find resources to pay for college.

    Further information

Finding scholarships to help pay for your college education can seem like an overwhelming task for many high school students. There are a number of things to think about: where to look for a scholarship, what qualifications are necessary and what happens if you can't find a scholarship match. Although the requirements and reach of a scholarship are beyond your control, the easiest part may be seeking out and finding scholarships to apply for.

Step1Check with your school to see if they have been alerted about possible scholarships. They will sometimes make it public to the student body by posting it on a bulletin board or in a school paper. You can also ask your guidance counselor about specific scholarships that would be right for you.

Step2Look in your local public library for scholarship information resources. They may also have a bulletin board, which may contain postings for scholarships by local philanthropists.

Step3Take an afternoon to visit the colleges and universities in your area to learn about their school-sponsored scholarships or any potential scholarships they may recommend you consider. They may be posted on a bulletin board near the guidance counselor's office or you may want to stop by the admissions office.

Step4Search online for the best access to national scholarships that you may not have access to elsewhere. The best way to do this is via a scholarship website that will allow you to search for scholarships that meet certain criteria and then allow you to apply for those postings online. This is fast, cheap and will give you the most comprehensive results.

FastWeb.com is a site to search for scholarships.
