With all the rainforests disappearing, the carbon dioxide that would normally have been taken up by the massive amount of photosynthesis they take part in is building up. It should also be noted that phytoplankton in the ocean contributes to the removal of carbon dioxide as much as the rainforests. The temperature changes in the ocean waters are affecting the phytoplankton thereby compounding the problem. No phytoplankton= no zooplankton=no food for the small fish=no food for bigger fish=total chaos.

Also, it should be noted that it is not developing countries who are responsible for the disappearing rainforests. it is large multinational companies from the US and the like such as Macdonalds (grazing land for cows)  and other logging companies. the amount of wood that people use as fuel is limited and most people in developing countries use petroleum based energy on a small scale.

I like to learn about climate change as global warming is not going to happen because the earth cools and warms over time. Climate change is a man-made event. we have put stuff in the atmosphere for thousands of years. But like the river-it died off and we had to clean it up; like the lakes, we had to clean them up; like the land we have to clean it up; the the ocean, we have to clean it up; like the atmosphere we have to clean it up. Humans have cut down half the trees, destroyed half the wetland and are living and growing food on half the grasslands, but these once were natures way of cleaning up the earth and stabilizing the climates.

North America has no right to talk about others cutting down the forests as we slashed and logged and burned our way through our rain forests, grassland and drained our wetland....

Yes, the rain forest needs to be protected.  Not only for the entire Eco-system itself, but the amount of potential beneficial medical research & development hasn't even scratched the surface of what resources are all available there.  It would be a huge loss for it to be destroyed.
