Question:

Is it in my best interest to report this accident to the police?

This morning I got into a car accident. Well, it was more of a fender bender. Anyways, the short story is that it was my fault and the other party’s car was physically damaged, but it was drivable and we both drove away from the scene.

We just swapped insurance and personal information. Right after the incident I called my insurance company to report it.

My question is should I call the police and file a report?? Like I said, it was my fault (but I didn't say that right out to the other people!). And I assume they will file a report today or within a few days. But should I go and file as well??

  1. ALWAYS call the police.  ALWAYS report an accident to your insurance company....ALWAYS!

  2. Unless anyone was hurt, I don't believe that it's necessary to call the police.

I've been in an accident such as that and I've known friends that have as well. They've been fine without calling the police.

    EDIT:

Also, someone on here mentioned that if the damages are over a certain amount, then a report is necessary. I believe that's true as well. In your situation, however, it sounds like a simple fender bender with the only problem being a simple blemish to the bumper...nothing too expensive for repair. So, don't worry too much about the fact that a form wasn't filled out on site. I'd call your local police dept. and see what the best option to do at this point is.

  3. It depends on the state you live in, where the accident occurred, and how much damage was done. For example, in RI accidents that occur on private property are not required to be reported to the police. Accidents that occur on public property AND involve more than $1000 in damages OR personal injury, must be reported. Obviously these things will change from state to state. I would check with your local department of motor vehicles and find out what their requirements are for filing a report. Good Luck. Sorry Dude :(

  4. Depends how costly the damage was, didn't sound too bad and if the other party was okay with it, I suppose there is no need to report it to the police.

  5. Yes call the police. Tell them it was not a hit and run. You did exchange information. The other persons insurance as well as yours will want an accident report. If you got their information, call them and see whats up...

  6. Do it. File a report.  It's called CYA.  Even though you were at fault, you would be amazed at what the other insurance company can make up about the accident.

  7. What state do you live in?  Usually a cop won't file a report unless there is more than $1000 in damages.  And if it's your fault, you don't want a ticket.  Don't report it.  You did the right thing by swapping info with the other guy.  No need to get the police involved with a fender bender.  Police only stop at the scene of a fender bender because they legally have to stop for stopped motorists.  They won't even bother writing up a fender bender.
