Question:

Is it inappropriate to wear net stockings to work?

I work in a place with a semi-standard dress code, consisting of a uniform shirt and black skirt or dress pants. Today I wore a pair of black net tights (like fishnets, sort of, but with a harlequin diamond-like pattern). I couldn't believe the comments I recieved - One coworker told me I "looked like a hooker".

Exactly which one of us was inappropriate here?

  1. Depends on what type of job you have - if it's an office job with lots of men then yes it would be considered inappropriate - if you work at a hair salon, store in the mall or boutique then it would be accepted moreso...

  2. Both of you.  Your outfit might not have been the most appropriate for work, but it was very rude for your coworker to insult you like that.  She probably should have kept her comments to herself or politely told you that the stockings might not be appropriate for the workplace.

In the future, err on the side of conservatism and you won't go wrong.  Don't go for things that are too s**y like short skirts, low cut blouses, or fishnet stockings.  You don't want to give people a bad impression of you.

  3. i would think so they are not considered classy for the work environment like regular sheer or nude stockings

  4. sorry to say but ive always thought they look at bit trashy especially for work. I realise they are just starting to come back into fashion so I guess people just need more time to get used to them. I just dont think they look nice, not even for social occasions. sorry :)

  5. I think net stockings can be ok in the workplace. Your co-workers were probably jealous or liked how you looked.  Maybe try a small pattern next time, but don't give up just yet. After a couple of times, people will stop making negative comments, and you'll just get positive ones. Just my 2 cents.
