  1. The horse wins the race -- it's owners get most of the money, the jockey gets a percentage.  That being said, the more talented your jockey, the better he will be able to guide the horse through the race -- there is a lot of strategy involved in deciding how to run a race.  Because horses generally run for a few years at most while jockeys may be around for 20+ years, a lot of people have favorite jockeys.  Personally, I'll always cheer for a favorite horse over a favorite jockey though.

  2. The jockey's job is to guide the horse through the race to make sure the horse gets the best trip.  If a horse is boxed in behind horses or if the horse goes wide the whole time, it's very hard for the horse to win.  A good jock can see how the race is developing and will know where he needs to be.  Everyone has a favorite jockey who shows that he understands pace and has the talent to predict how the race shapes up before it does.

However, the horse does most of the work.  A jockey can't take a horse and give it more energy and make it win.  A jockey only can make the best out of what he has.  The jockey has to understand what type of horse he is on and give the horse the best possible trip for that type of horse.

  3. The Horse is always the winner! That's why people bet on the horse!

  4. good question and always debatetable.

    i say horse 90% - Jockey 10%

  5. well look at it like this........ a jockey without a horse has no chance....... a horse without a jockey is deemed a non runner, so i would say its a combined effort!

  6. The jockey has to control the horse, and has to hit it consistently to keep it going at its top speed. Of course it is the horse that does all the hard work in the races, but the jockey has to keep everything going correctly. Alone nothing could be possible, together they can win a race. From my point of view, the horse does the hard work, so therefore they are the winners. The jockey's are sort of like secondary winners.

  7. horse,trainer,jocky in that order

  8. A good question.  I believe it requires the talents of both jockey and horse to win a race, but I follow the horses.  It's kind of like asking whether it's the pilot or the aircraft that makes for a smooth and safe experience.  All pilots are highly trained professionals and know their crafts, just as jockeys are professionals and skilled in what they do.  But the horse...the horse is the real athlete in horse racing, not the jockey.

  9. It is up to the jockey to give their horse an opportunity to win.  A great horse with a bad jockey or a jockey that makes a bad decision during the race probably will not win.  A good horse with a great jockey and a perfect ride may beat a better horse.  If I were a betting person, which I am not, and I knew nothing about the horses, I would pick the one with the best jockey.  Generally, I like to pick horses that are descendants of Triple Crown race winners, or horses that have won the most races.
