  1. it is a myth or superstition.

  2. It's a myth. It doesn't hurt, though, to do all the necessary libations and stuff when you do change the name ... just make sure you save some of the bubbly for yourself and the naming party.

  3. It is a myth, Poseiden (AKA Neptune) is the Greek God of the seas.

  4. That is nothing but superstition. I have changed the name of my boat, departed on a Friday after eating split pea soup and successfully circumnavigated the globe single-handed. There are a lot of superstitions and if you believe in one shouldn't you believe in them all.

  5. this is all bs...if this true then the old sea lore of bananas and women on boats must be true also, and women sail with me all the time, and i'm still here...lol...i would not worry about it, its just stupid old man bull...

  6. It's just as true as black cats crossing your path and causing bad luck, it's just as true as walking under a ladder causing bad luck, it's just as true as hanging a horseshoe in your house bringing good luck.

They aren't myths- technically a myth is a story, a tale of some sort.

Your example and the ones I've offered are called superstitions- beliefs that certain actions or signs bring about some sort of change- good luck, bad luck, happiness, sadness, etc.
