Is it just me, or do nice and kind people not survive in the workplace?

I kept being told off in my old job for being too helpful with the customers, spending too much time with them and adding the personal touch. I was working in the wedding industry so the personal touch goes a long way in making a bride feel comfortable. I dont work for them anymore.

Actually the nicest people do end up at the top.  It's a balance you'll learn in time.  Business is business and it can get nasty but in my business the people doing the best are generally the nicest people too.

I agree with Fooligan. I work for the NHS and it's not so 'cut throat' as the private sectors.... I would go so far as to say my work is normally stress free.

The worst place for a nice kind person would be in Sales in the private sector.

IMO the best place for a nice kind person would be in the Social Care.

it depends on the work environment. guppies shouldn't try to swim with the sharks.

That's true; you're expected to be cutthroat to survive in the workplace. People who are too nice just don't make it.

I am sorry to say that you are correct. All those type "A" personalities just walk all over "nice", "kind" people to get ahead. Be proud of who you are and what you do and they can't hurt you.

Have you read that "*** hole" book about this American chap who was always far too nice, so he decided to do something about it. He started to be a real *** hole and succeeded. I do think that nice and kind people get trampled on, I'm one of them! I also think that people prefer nice and kind people to *** holes but we still get treated like ****. I am getting sick and tired of it and want to become harder but part of me just can't.

Depends where you work. Public sector they thrive. Private sector they fail.

if u say so about nice and kind pple not survive in the workplace, the world will be in chao oredi. they are just dump dump to understand how to survive, that's all.

2 survive the working place, simply shield up and red alert that's all. stand down when u are home unless u have a spy partner. hee hee.

no need to get involve their clown drama during working time cos u wont get a pay rise eventually unless confirm by boss then that is a different case oredi. :P the most importantly know your job well and u can fly like a supergirl in your job. noone dares to touchy u.

Does not seem to be anymore, nice kind decent people surviving in workplace because this society of 'dog eat dog' has mostly come down to cheats, liars, disrespectful, rear kissing, without good common sense.  That goes for employers as well as the employees.
