The number of them on the yahoo vegetarian/vegan things is astounding to me.

Why are so many people now deciding to declare themselves that more?

Why are you a vegan and for how long?

Also can you explain why some vegans are sorta extreme (even for a vegetarians stand point) and some are sorta mean to vegetarians?

Also are you a serious full-time vegan or only sometimes ?

Do you think its just a fad for them?

I know people were not made to digest anything from animals even milk from cows and eggs arent good persay thats why there are lactose-intolerant people but still WHY?

  1. To answer your questions:

Most vegans want to minimise their personal contribution to animal suffering and exploitation. Some do it for health reasons.

I was vegetarian for decades, and became a vegan 12 years ago because I didn't want to make any contribution that I could avoid making to animal exploitation.

I don't think veganism is extreme, and I've never met one who was mean to vegetarians.

Someone who's vegan 'only sometimes' isn't a vegan. That's not a criticism of them, it's just a matter of the correct meaning of words.

It may be a fad for some people, just as vegetarianism might. But for most, no it isn't a fad.

  2. Environmental purposes...

  3. Go to a slaughter-house and you will understand

  4. I am not vegan, but i think it is because the suffering anuimals endure is not just when they are slaughtered. the milking and egg producing ani, mals are treated badly as well, so by avoiding dairy and animal products, they are helping them as well........

  5. I think many vegetarians decide to become vegan after learning about the ways animals are mistreated and killed in the egg & dairy industries. (For instance, male chicks are thrown into high-speed grinders while still conscious because they don't produce eggs and are therefore worthless to egg farms.) If someone became vegetarian out of a desire to prevent animal suffering, then veganism is a logical step.

I've been vegan for about 6 years to reduce animal suffering.

Veganism is simply a means to the end of reducing animal suffering; it's not an end in itself. Sometimes people can be extreme when they lose sight of the goal and treat veganism as a quest for personal purity.

Some vegans may be mean to vegetarians because they don't understand why vegetarians still support the cruelty in the egg and dairy industries. When you've seen undercover footage of egg and dairy farms, it can be hard to understand why people who care about animals would still support such tremendous suffering. But I think most vegans realize that they didn't become vegan overnight, and vegetarians are doing so much more than the average person.

It may be a fad for some, but many are really committed to reducing suffering in the meat, egg, and dairy industries. An acquaintance of mine investigated an egg farm and the video footage is something that will stay in my memory forever.

  6. I'm not sure why the sudden surge in the vegan population on Y!A. You always have to take into consideration that some are just beginning the process and others might not be telling the truth. (Of course, you will find posers in ALL sections of Y!A).

I'm a vegan because of heatlh, ethical and environmental reasons. I just became a vegan in January of 2008, but I had been a vegetarian up until then. I've actually abstained from milk for those 6 years, but still ate cheese. I finally gave up cheese last summer but still used honey. Now, my diet is cruelty-free.

I think that with any counter-culture or specific group of folks you will find zealots. For example, I'm sure that there are some practicing Catholics who prefer Mass in Latin, prefer the women's heads are covered and will not touch the communion wafer during the Eucharist. They are dedicated to their belief in the way things were run pre Vatican II and firmly believe that anything less is "not Catholic". I'm sure some vegans feel the same way about vegetarians. It varies and each person is different.

    I'm a serious, full-time vegan.

I'm not one to judge others. If it is a fad, then they were able to experience life without consuming animals. Hopefully they gained a new perspective about themselves and the world around them. If not, then that's okay too. Others' motivations to the dietary lifestyle are none of my business. I know who I am and why I ascribe to veganism and that's all that really matters at the end of the day.

I hope I answered all of your questions. Have a good day.

  7. Many people are becoming vegan these days, some do it for health, some do it for the animals, and there are so many other reasons.

I became a vegan because as a vegetarian, i thought i needed to take one more step, mainly because the animals are still hurt during the process of getting the milk etc, and Ive been a vegan for about 2 months now.

Some vegans do stop eating everything cooked, basically they go on a raw vegan diet, which is a bit extreme, but like i said, its really there decisions, and i respect that.

I haven't heard of vegans being mean to vegetarians, i don't see the need, as a vegan, i do not dis-respect veggies or meat eaters, because we all make our own decisions.

I'm always a vegan, there's no such thing as a part time vegan.

Don't know what you mean by is it just a fad for 'them'.

Watch the video if you please. Its basically another reason I'm vegan - http://www.meat.org/

    Just my opinion.

  8. people choose to live this way for many reasons

some being: to lose weight, animal cruelty sake, grown up in the life style, health reason, etc.

there are many ppl who try the life style but can't keep up with it and end up having to eat meat, and for others it can be a "fad".... but there are still that percentage out there that relize this can be for the better.

Also, somepeople who choose to be vegans don't like the fact of vegetarians b/c they think if your going to not eat meat you should go the full length... as in going vegan.

This isn't all the reason, like i said there are many reasons that people decide to do this. My only thing is why do meat eaters have to pick on us for doing somethign that seems so right to us?

but I'm just a young vegetarian lol

  9. well i just recently turned vegan, only nine days, the reason i turned was because i was vegetarian and i think its wrong to treat animals the way we do, and eating animals products aids animal suffering so for me being vegetarian was like being a hypocrite to myself.

im not mean to vegetarians at all or meat eaters, for one i think its great to be vegetarian and that you are saving animals, i just felt guilty about being vegetarian when i knew i could be doing more. i think often times veg/ans look down upon meat eaters which is completely wrong, just because we have different views doesnt make us any better than them,

i havnt been vegan for very long, but im being a full time one, i dont do anything halfass.

i dunno if its just a fad or what, but i know quite a few people who used to be vegan and just went back to being a veghead,
