why is everyone here so bitter about mainstream music in general. yes most of it completely sucks but it seems here that it's like a rule to hate mainstream. it's not all bad. liking bands that have been commercially successful doesnt make you a sell-out. why do so many people here think that just because a band gets commercially successful that right away makes them sell-outs? why are so many people here so anti-mainstream.

and dont start using jonas brothers and miley cyrus because we all know that they are the ones that are giving mainstream a bad name.

i'm not a big fan of mainstream but it's not all bad. mainstream pop is pretty bad but why so many haters on mainstream rock???

if you answer this dont be a douche btw. just give a real answer.

  1. Not necessarily, when bands start to sell out they forget about their fans and the reason they even started doing what they love in the first place. Their main aim is to make it on the charts and get as much success as they could in order to start making more money.

Once a song or band is mainstream it's/they're mostly what everyone talks about or listens to, they're always on the radio and on the TV. Do you actually prefer listening to a band that care about their fans and the people supporting them, or one that only cares about the money they'll be getting from their fans?

  2. When a lot of people here the word mainstream (sometime I'm included in this) they automatically think of the worst; miley cyrus, jonas brothers etc.

A lot of bands that are labeled "sell outs" are actually not. To me a band sells out when they drastically change there style to get more money, success etc. But a lot of bands change up there sound because they want to try something different and people automatically call them sell outs. One example is the band The dillinger escape plan. They used to be very heavy and if you look at songs like black bubblegum, the song is not really that heavy at all. But I think they just wanted to change things up.

I try to listen to at least one full song by a mainstream rock (or any band really) before I say I like them or not and most mainstream rock I have not liked but you are right that there are some diamonds in the ruff in that genre.

  3. Personally i hate it when people do that. They never take a chance to listen to a band because its mainstream or "popular".

Some mainstream bands are really bad but i mean, there are some bands that are extremely good, its just that some people are a bit arrogant and think they all suck, which is definitely not true.

  4. it's not that mainstream isnt good. I like a little bit of MCR, and I also like Paramore, The Academy Is... and The Rocket Summer. It's just that mainstream is so overplayed, and overrated that it becomes very annoying, which makes us not like it. not to mention all the fans who obsess.

  5. It depends on what you mean by 'mainstream'. If you mean the Jobros and pretty much everything on the top 10 of iTunes (with the exceptions of Coldplay and new Metallica, who are good), then, yes, it sucks. But if you mean bands that are very popular, then I have to protest. Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Metallica, the Beatles, Pink Floyd... All those bands are mainstream in that sense. Now you can't say that THEY suck. And past mainstream bands like Michael Jackson and others are also good. So I guess most of these people are either thinking about Miley-Jobros and stuff, either they are very closed-minded...

  6. they dont have a clue what mainstream is, they always mention new bands of today and they say they hate it but they say they listen to

    Led Zeppelin

    The Beatles

    The Who

    etc etc......

they are the biggest mainstream artists around

  7. Nope, you're right, and I'm one of the mainstream-disliking people. But everybody here does seem to hate all mainstream bands for the exception of those random 13 year old girls that talk about Fall Out Boy or what not.

  8. I don't listen to "mainstream" therefore I don't typically comment on it...I try to keep my comments to bands or genre's I'm interested in.....UNLESS, somebody posts something like "hey check out this new band and tell me what you think!"

If I take the time to check em out, and they suck....I say they suck.

Conversely, if I'm pleasantly surprised, I thank them for sharing and put it in my backlog of bands to research a bit more....

My idea of YA is more "sharing information and ideas " rather than just going around shredding other people if thier taste doesn't match my own

    Good question

  9. Well, for the most part, you can judge a band by being mainstream.  Most mainstream bands are a lot more poppier.  If you don't like Pop, then it's safe to say you won't like mainstream.  But, to say it's c**p, I agree is wrong.  I generally don't like mainstream, but I don't bash it constantly.  I actually don't even pay attention to what's popular or mainstream.  I stick to what I know and like.

  10. yeah, i kinda see what you mean. people here automatically seem to hate a band if its mainstream. with me, i just don't like modern rock and i actually bother listening to bands before i insult them.

  11. I'm not bitter. I just think it stinks. I just acknowledge the fact that most popular music is not popular on the fact that the music is interesting and well-written (they have production and all kinds of audio processing to make up for that). Popular music is popular music because it's attractive and marketable. It can be put on the radio and on TV and sell merchandise.

I'm a fan of music for the sake of the music itself, not for the merchandise that it's been made to sell. MTV and commercial radio sound like nothing but a big commercial to me. It's unlistenable. I prefer artists and bands who I know write their own music and put their heart and souls into creating pieces that are sincere, real and hit to the chest, whether these artists play rock, soul, R&B, country, metal, hip hop, punk, indie  . . . whatever. If it sounds sincere enough to me I'll like it. But 90% of the music on populatr radio, TV, etc. has nothing that resembles this type of sincerity to me. Call me bitter or elitist, fine. But at least it's something I'm passionate about.

  12. Yeah, I do think that's true. But that's because most mainstream/modern rock music is terrible, and most people here have good tastes in music.

An Observation-There tends to be alot of Coldplay and U2 bashing on here, and its probably because they're mainstream, even though they're pretty good.
