  1. I can think of one more who was held captive with Lieutenant Commander John S. McCain at what was called the "Hanoi Hilton". He was the "commander" of the "POW Squadron" which the POWs formed as a unit during their captivity. He was Vice Admiral James Stockdale. He ran for Vice President as H. Ross Perot's running mate in 1992 and passed away a few years ago.

Perhaps those who showed up at the Republican Convention are the only ones who are still alive, physically able to travel and/or support Captain McCain in his bid for the Presidency. Don't forget. They were released from captivity in 1973. That's 35 years ago.

  2. There were many thousands of POWs in Vietnam.  And several thousand that never came home -- if you want to know more about that, I recommend "Soldiers of Misfortune" as a great read on the plight of POWs from all wars.

  3. PT 109, the movie, came out in 1958. I was only 3 so I don't remember how JFK used that in his campaign.

Pictures of Jimmy Carter in dress whites were used in his campaign.

Even Harry Truman's WWI experiences were used. I am real sure that the first active General to run for President had his WWII exploits exploited.

Hardly the first time an event in a candidates life was used in the campaign

One thing for sure it was no day at the spa!

There we 766 US POW"s held by the North Vietnamese, 114 did not come home alive.
