do others have dorky names? i mean, exibit a) one of my dads many brothers is Sam. Funny enough, this makes him my uncle, so my brother and I call him Uncle Sam. (My grandfather apparently assumed he had a good sense of humor.) so is it just my relatives, or do other people have comletly "humorous" names?

  1. Your grandparents probably named him Samuel.. for reasons other than you think. I doubt that they were concerned that eventually he would be someone's real uncle, and have nephews poking fun at him.  It's only "dorky" because of your own perspective.

  2. What's so donky about Sam?

  3. There are thousands of black men who prefer "Uncle Thomas" to "Uncle Tom" from their nieces and nephews, even though they are "Tom" at all other times.

Samuel is one of the classic names; not quite as popular as John, but in the top 20 over the years. "Uncle Sam" just comes with the territory.

Count your blessings. Here's a guy from the LDS 1880 census:

Frost T. SNOW - 1880 United States Census / North Carolina

SonL   Gender: Male   Birth: <1861> NC

"Frost T. Snow" = "Frosty Snow", get it?  His parents saddled him with that in 1861. They probably chuckled all night by the whale oil lamp, then Dad went off to join the militia and shoot him some Yankees.

  4. There was a family that lived here in Colorado whose last name was DORK (and I am not kidding <LoL>).

I don't know if they got too much flack about it, but they changed it legally about 2 yrs ago. (I don't know what it is now.)

Can you imagine saying 'Hi...My name is Michael DORK.'???
