Is it legal anywhere in the US to challenge someone to a duel to the death?

Just one of the many interesting questions my son asked me to which I did not have an answer. Don't worry we're not looking to try it out if such a thing is legal, just curious!

  1. Uhhh...  No...  That would be murder...

  2. I don't think it was ever legal (you know, that whole murder thing), however it was certainly more acceptable a couple centuries ago than it is now. It was one of those things the government allowed to happen under the table, like prostitution in Las Vegas (contrary to popular belief, it's not legal in Clark County). Mutual combat, on the other hand, is legal- provided both parties consent to the fight.

  3. I think that is murder sweetie, but remind me not to get on your bad side...lol...

  4. yes anywhere in -1845-

  5. There are probably places where the challenge itself is not a crime, but no place where the duel would be legal.

  6. NO, it's considered murder and you go to jail for a long time

  7. To merely utter the words?

  8. of course not the u.s. would never let their citizens do that

  9. only back in the days of Hamilton and the old western days as well. but they call it a show down rather duel. no its all been out law some times ago.

  10. God I hope not.  But you Americans have some real lulus in your law books!

  11. NO.

Many states have laws against dueling.  Other states have common law rulings against it.

No matter how you try it,  you will end up in court.

  12. It's all legal...until you kill the person. Then it's 1st degree murder and most likely "don't drop the soap in the shower" time.

  13. Yea, Prison
