My kids know a 16 year old who lives in Washington state. He use to live in my state of South Dakota. He is suppose to come out here in the Fall by himself but he definitely won't be staying at my house. He plans on being on his own for good. His parents don't seem to care but his family is pretty dysfunctional.

Is this legal ? and if it is then are there going to be any community services that would help get on his feet. Aren't homeless shelters and soup kitchens for those who are over 18? I know there are homeless mothers with children who go to those places but would a 16 year old be able to go by himself?

  1. You should look up your state laws. In Ontario it is.

I don't know of any programs that help kids like that. It's their choice. If there's abuse he can call children's aid, but if he just wants to move out then he's on his own. No one is putting a gun to his head to do it.

But if you really want to find programs, etc. then I'd research it.

  2. if the kid goes about it legally you can be legally emancipated and get government funded support so that the kid will be able to pay rent for an apartment and support himself, the kid would  need to go to court and prove that his current living situation is unacceptable and that he can take better care of himself.
