Is it legal for a phone company to force you to change your current home phone number?

Is it legal for a phone company to force you to change your current home phone number when switching to their service? We would like to switch to Verizon which is now available, but they are telling us we have to change out home number, something we have never had to do when switching services in the past. So, is this legal?

Check you current phone company to see if there is a freeze on your number. I had my phone from (cablevision) and I wanted to switch to verizon. I call verizon multiple times and they told me they cannot port my number. I keep calling until they tell me yes they can port my number.

If you currently have VOIP they can stop you from porting your number to other companies since its not mandatory for them to do so.
