I am buying an used car from a dealer who has repainted the vehicle with a different color. I am a bit hesitant in buying considering the legal implications of this work? where can I get more information about this?

  1. Of course it's legal.

  2. It is not illegal to repaint any car or vehicle a completely different color. Some states require that info on the registration most do not. If your state does require you to change the registration then all you have to do is go to Motor vehicle and have it changed. Otherwise you don't have to do anything. It is legal in Florida to change colors without informing MV but I would check to be sure since the last time I bought or sold a car in that state which has been almost a year. Dealers change a color as a last resort. When we repaint a car we try to keep it the same color because it cost a bit of money to have it done right, especially door panels and trunks. If it was done right you will always be able to tell without being told it was a complete repaint. The only time we may repaint a car a different color is to make a clone car of an expensive limited edition.

  3. The last answer is partly right. You can have it painted. But if you do be sure to take it to a State licensed and Bonded body shop. If you do it yourself. It doesnt matter. Paint it. if you take it to a shop, they have to be licensed by the state of Florida. It has nothing to do with changing the color. Just with who is painting it. The best way to change the looks of a stolen car is to paint it. So the body shops who are equipt to do them have to be licenced. It is the law. If the shop was not licensed and it was raided by the DMV police. And yes there is such a thing. You might lose your car.

  4. Find out why it was repainted, not why it is a different color. Repainting is not illegal and any color can be used. I expect it has had extensive body work done.

  5. Yes, they can repaint the car. You should be more concerned about why the dealership repainted it, rather than the legal implications. I bet there was more body work done recently than a simple repainting.

  6. You can repaint a car any color you want, any time you want.
