If an individual places a piece of mail into a locked mail box that can only be opened by the post person, that has a stamp on it but has not gone through the post office and been processed by them.

Is it legal or illegal?

I received a statement in my mail (postal access only) box, sealed but with no process date by the US Postal Service and I am wondering as to if this is legal? Should I involve the Postal Inspector or should I just take the mail to my local Post Office and have them cancel the stamp?

Envelope and stamp in excellent condition can I use it since I get them free?

  1. You better get it canceled. Stamp fraud is a federal offense jk.

And what do you mean "them"?,free? More than one? Are they addressed to you? How about asking your postman?

But if the P.O. didn't deliver them, the stamp is free game.

  2. You can't reuse a stamp once it's been placed on an envelope even if it hasn't been canceled.

  3. Hmm, good question, Jed. I would think that one might report it to the local post office and see what happened. I don't think it really matters, though... I'd like to see other answers to this question, though.

  4. That's illegal, you need to report that to your local postal service.

  5. A complicated question. It is not legal for you to do so, no.

It is legal for a company to do so if they have an account with the postal service. I get a lot of mail such as this from companies. They make bulk deals with the postal service to deliver, usually junk mail and coupon stuff, directly into the box without going through sorting facility. They save money buying in bulk and postal service saves money not having to send it through the sorting machine.

  6. Does it really matter is the question I'm wondering?  Did you need this statement?  Or is it junk mail...honestly, I'm confused why you would contact the hard working men and women of the USPS over something like this when there are bigger problems for them to deal with.  I'm confident that your postal worker did not allow someone else access to your mail box.  Check with your land lord.  I'm sure they have a key.
