If I purchase mp3s legally through a website or iTunes, is it legal if I burn them on a CD-R for backup or to listen to in a car? Because I purchase the songs I download but I don't buy the whole artist's CD, but if I make a mix CD with different purchased mp3s, is that legal? Is it legal if I give the CD to a friend or burn a CD from sons I purchased for a friend? It would technically be the same as giving them the CD with the songs except I'd have a backup?

  1. Yes, since you are licensed to use that copy...

  2. If its for you, and if you wont sell it or give it away, yes its legal

  3. Yes, you are allowed to make a backup or to burn your songs FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY!

    This means you can:

Listen to the music in your car

Listen to the music at a party

Play it on your home sound system

    etc.

    But you CAN'T:

Give the CDs out to your friends

    Sell the CDs

    etc.

  4. Yes, as long as you don't sell copies.
