Is it legal to catch a ball in ping pong if it is obviously out ?

by obviously out i mean it is past the ping pong table, and i catch it before it hits the ground.

It is not legal, but in  a friendly game where you don't want to chase the ball, you and your opponent may allow it if you like.

I don't see why that should be a problem since if your opponent smashes the ball and it misses the table and hits your thigh or some other part of the body on the full, you are awarded the point. So, if you caught the ball once it's beyond the table, it should be fine.
