Question:

Is it legal to create your own press pass?

I don't need a police issued press pass, I do not intend to cover news events involving police lines, fire lines, or emergency disaster lines at all. At least that is not my intent at this time.

Many newspapers, tv stations, radio stations, et all do in fact issue a company press pass to their reporters, for the purposes of identification only. These types of privately produced press passes, with the company logo on them, and a picture of the employee, etc, do not automatically get you back stage, or free tickets, but they can, and often are accepted as a form of credential to at least allow general access to areas while you are dragging around cameras and recording devices.

My question is basically this...

If I have my own outfit, my own firm, can I just make up my own press passes for not only myself, but anyone else who may be working with me on a project? Is this legal?

  1. Yes, you can create and display your own press pass.....as long as all information is above board.

You, or those with you, would not want to be accused of any deception, so play it straight with the facts.

I suggest you use a photograph of each worker, with their full name and some identifying details (perhaps their job function) and the full name, address, and telephone number of your organization.

    Hope this opinion helps you.

  2. Sure you can. Who would stop you?
