  1. Its not the cyclist that need to ride carefully.

  2. It is provided that the A road does not have motorway classification. There are some roads like A1(M) where you are not allowed to cycle. Also cycling can be prohibited on any road. This will be indicated by the appropriate road sign: a red circle surrounding a cycle.

  3. Yes it is, but a bit risky but if you have cycle lanes you should be o.k

  4. yes - it is legal to cycle on A roads in the UK.  I think it is only motorways that you can't cycle on.  You just need to ride carefully.  I have seen some hideous cyclist accidents (including a fatality) on the the junction of 2 A-roads where I live.

  5. Yes, you can cycle on all roads except motorways. Mind you, some of the A roads are almost motorways and it wouldn't be advisable to cycle there even though you are technically allowed.

  6. Yes I think it is.

  7. No only motorways.

  8. Yes it is legal. You are not allowed to walk on them though.

Many A roads have cycle lanes.

I think it is only Motorways where cycles are not allowed.

  9. Only motorways, which have blue road signs, and roads which specifically exclude cyclists (picture of bicycle in a red circle) are off limits to a bike.

It certainly is legal to cycle on A roads, you can tell this by the green signs instead of blue, even if they otherwise seem as big as a motorway. However, as advised, large dual-carriageway A roads where the national speed limit (70mph for cars) applies, can be dangerous as most car users don't expect to see a cyclist, so aren't always on the lookout for you. Lorries are even worse, as they don't get far enough away and you can be sent flying just by the force of the air they are displacing as they thunder past.

In the event of an accident, even if you are in the right, and the motorist in the wrong, you're still gonna come off very much second best, so it is better to find an alternative route via country roads. It'll be quieter and safer, and also you won't be breathing all the toxic and polluting fumes that the vehicles produce.

  10. Yes it's legal.  It might carry the death penalty.
