Question:

Is it legal to derestrict an 80cc Moped at 17?

Basically, I'm 17, And I have recently acquired an 80cc Moped, Will it stay in the legal limit for provisional motorcycle entitlement if I de-restrict it? Or will it go over? Thanks.

The limits have changed in the last few years, basically what others have said it is legal to derestrict the moped as long as:

It makes no more that 15BHP

If you have a full moped licence you use "L" plates

Insurance is invalid unless you inform them of the changes

Other than these have fun and see what you can get out of it!

On a negative note some mopeds/scooters actually make their full power in standard form and it is actually very difficult to get more from them

If you derestrict it it will be classed as a motorcycle and not a moped (remember all mopeds by law are 50cc and restricted to 30mph)

Actually I think your OK cause if you are a learner and over 17 and have the cbt done then your allowed upto 125cc @ 12 bhp. Technically you could make a 80cc moped go past the 12 bhp and you would be on dodgy ground but as its only 80cc I don't see a problem. Your insurance might be void but not sure. So your allowed upto 12 bhp and if your 80 cc moped can match that, then it will be fast. Good luck.

It is restricted to keep it legal. By un-restricting it, it will be essentially illegal.

But in real live, there is no way for police to know if it has been un-restricted.

BOTH MOTORBIKE AT MINIMUM 17 YEAR OLD

YOU MUST STICK TO THESE UNTIL YOU HAVE HELD THE FULL LICENCE FOR 2 YEARS OR AGE 21

BEFORE THE 2 MOTORBIKE GROUPS YOU COULD DE RESTRICT AFTER PASSING TEST
