I need some soil, but I don't wan to buy it because of all the controversy about what they put in the soil at the store. There's a really nice big park that's over 100 years old near my house and I think the soil is much better there, but I'm not sure if it's legal or not to take soil from a park. Is it legal to take soil if it's a very large park?

  1. It is illegal in most states if not all states.  Maybe try asking a farmer for good black dirt.

  2. it depends on where you live but i wouldnt do it because it is probably owned by the city or goverment!

  3. If everyone in your area were allowed to take a bag full of soil, in time, the park would be one big depression.  Which is why it is prohibited to remove soil or plants from any public park or nature area.  Best to buy pre-bagged soil and add a little sand or peat to it.

  4. The answer to your question is no.The park is either owned by the City in which you live or the State. Both would consider removing dirt or anything a felony. You can buy a small bag of dirt for a few dollars at any home improvement center which is a lot cheaper than a lawyer court cost not to mention the jail time..

  5. Where I live, it's public theft. As far as I know, that's not legal.

  6. No, that would be stealing. You don't own the park (or its soil). What does it matter what "people are saying" is in the bags of soil from the store? The majority is rarely right. Just read the lable for yourself. They're all different. It's not expensive. And even if it had chemicals in it, what does it matter? You've been around chemicals your whole life and you're still alive and not growing a 3rd arm or anything weird like that....
